Women without makeup, women in sensible shoes, women who don't 'push their tits around', do not succeed nearly as well in today's society. Studies show that even female employers would rather hire a woman who 'looks like she takes care of herself' - makeup and beauty have become so entrenched in society that women (and men too) really don't have a choice. If you want to make a living, you have to look like you care about yourself.

It's always annoyed me that Kevin Rudd was criticised for his policies, but Julia Gillard is criticised for her hair.

It's not just women though. Men have to spend hour upon hour in the gym, they gel their hair, they have their razors and nose-hair trimmers and the latest in fashion too.

We're all under irrational pressure to look good and wouldn't you say that in a perfect world, men wouldn't have to worry about all that either?

Women aren't 'insisting' on wearing makeup. Trust me, we'd all rather not!! But if we showed up to work in track pants with our hair out, we'd be fired. We're taught to look good from a very young age because without that lifelike P/S, we don't get anywhere.

You see it in the animal kingdom, too - the peacock with the brightest feathers gets the most attention, but at least they're working what they're born with. It's worrying that we live in a society where the expectation is that you'll fake, edit and create 90% of your look.

I thought this was a really interesting arcticle. It's difficult to determine how much responsibility the photographer has in promoting and creating 'beauty' - the client has a right to be happy with their photos and feel beautiful, but at the same time, isn't the truth more important? Interesting to see how this will end up; if we'll keep painting our photos until they're someone else's face, or rebel and go back to basics.

Maybe we should ask then why women feel the need to do all that in the first place, Mike?

Whether I give my clients what they want isn't in question here. I always aim to make the client happy. : )
Thanks for your comments.

I mean women everywhere insist on wearing make-up.... They're just P/S themselves by doing that.
Ask many men and they would say that they prefer women without make-up.... especially the woman they love.
But do they listen....do they wear sensible shoes, and stop pushing their tits around or quit putting that black crap around their eyes or making their mouth look like a gunshot wound.... peircing their eyes, tounge, lips, ears, navel, clitoris etc.
Give the client what they want and in the meantime do your own shots the way you want them.
